Whining Noise

1472 Views 11 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Snowbird
I am hearing a whining noise on my 2018 Clarity which has gotten progressively worse over the past few months. Several threads have talked about bearing failure on the wheels and I am wondering if that is the same issue I am seeing. Is this something easy to diagnose if I take it to a general mechanic or do I need to take it in to the dealer. I am assuming there is no warranty on this ? Thanks

Does the noise change with road speed?

It does seem to get louder the faster I go, but I cannot tell where it is coming from.

That's an indication of wheel bearings.
Thanks. I will get it checked out then and reply back
Not a 100% sure indicator it is a wheel bearing but usually the noise from a bad front wheel bearing is more pronounced if you sway the car at speeds.
The loading of the bad bearing increases the noise.
Find a little traveled road at 40-50 mph turn the wheel left and right and check the noise, a turn to the left indicates a right bearing if the noise increases and opposite on a right turn.

Thanks. I'll try that

I tried that and I am pretty sure that the noise increased when I turned to the left vs. the right. I will take that information to the mechanic. Incidentally I got stopped by the cops for swaying and intimidating the driver in front of me when I was trying this. Luckily he let me go when I told him what I was doing 😀

Very understanding cop. I'm surprised they didn't run an FST on you. Such things are better done in a mall parking lot.
I realize that now. It was an empty road, there was just the 1 car several hundred feet in front of me and the cop car several hundred feet behind me

Unfortunately, you need higher speeds to load the bearings, I used to go out on a Sunday morning early to do tests like that.
Did you just rotate rear tires to front before the noise started?
