"Power Systems" in red indicator on & Drive mode change unavailable

7557 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  tomprc
Hello all, has anyone had this issue before? When I press Sport or EV buttons I see "Drive Mode Change Unavailable" and noticed that POWER SYSTEM in red is lit up to the right of the speedo. It was happening off and on and today I noticed the POWER SYSTEM indicator and now it stays on all the time. I have an appointment next week with the dealer. Otherwise the car drives fine and I can access HV mode and HV charge mode. This is a new car with less than 250 miles on it and basically started the day after I picked it up. Bummed out in the 91311. I will attach a picture later on and reply after my dealer appointment. Dash picture added.

Try putting it into ECON mode (green leaf icon shows in upper left corner).

Then switch to Sport mode.

Let us know what happens ?
The car will not allow ev nor sport mode when the power systems indicator is on. The car has been driving fine but I do not think not being able to go to sport or ev mode is normal and the power systems indicator on is normal nor a safety feature. I started out with a full charge and drove about 60 miles today with the power systems warning lit up the whole time unable to go to sport or ev mode of course. I went to a charge station and after about 2 hours 30 minutes went back to the car and now the power systems warning is off and I am able to go to sport and ev modes. Something is not right. My service appointment is Wednesday.
Before driving off, whilst in park, press the ECON button and see if the car will go into ECON mode (green leaves over the Ready lamp.

Then put into drive and see if the error message shows up.

Do NOT switch to sport, HV, or HV charge modes - don't touch the buttons.

When you press too many functions quickly (HV, Sport, Econ) in front of the shifter, this problem may occur because you are confusing the drive system.

I picked up the car and they replaced the elec coolant heater part number 79900-trw-a01 and billed honda about 3k for the repair. All modes working fine now. Makes you think twice about getting an extended warranty since this part was not that big. I recently purchased an extended warranty from Good Sam for my 2013 Nissan Sentra with 90k on it and the cost is like $65 per quarter. I will have to get a quote on the Clarity and post it.

Most people seem to purchase from Hyannis Honda you can get a quote from them by going to https://hyannishondacare.com/

Costs about $1,500 for five years extension past the Honda 36 month warranty, at 120,000 miles, slightly lower price if you insure for lower mileage for the same number of months.

Best to purchase either during the first 6,000 miles, or if already past 6,000 miles wait until just before reaching the 36 month expiration of Honda regular warranty (powertrain and battery are longer), which is just as good of a deal. Due to warranty overlap if you purchase during the time in between costs more for less years.

If you purchase prior to 6,000 miles they consider your car "new" and the warranty starts with the original purchase date of the car. If you get an 8 year warranty that is really only for years 4-8 for general items, and years 6-8 for powertrain since the standard Honda powertrain warranty is five years.

If you purchase after 6,000 miles the warranty starts at the time you purchase the warranty, and the maximum is five years, so assuming you still have at least a couple of years left on the standard warranty you would effectively only be insuring for years 4-5 on general items, and basically nothing on powertrain since you would still be under Honda warranty for that, and you would be uninsured after year 5 (other than battery).

So after you have passed 6,000 miles it is better to wait until just before the 36 mile warranty expires to purchase the five year warranty, that way you will be insuring for years 4-8 on general and 6-8 powertrain, just like if you had purchased new warranty prior to 6,000 miles. Actually when I got quotes the cheapest overall is to wait until 36 months, the new car was slightly higher even though the coverages are for the same years. But you have no guarantee that their prices won't go up by the time you purchase two or three years from now, so it may work out about the same.

Glad to hear it was covered under warranty.
In my past experience, Honda above all other manufacturers have held the highest level of customer care.
From our 2003 & 2007 Accords, 2014 Pilot and 2018 Clarity - Honda still stands behind their manufacturing quality based on past covered repairs beyond the standard warranties...

I wonder how much of that was labor to get the part out and then back in.

What's the official name of this item? On one ebay page, it says: Electric Coolant Heater Pump 79900-TRW-A01. Is the the official product name on the package? 18-19 Honda Clarity OEM Electric Coolant Heater Pump 79900-TRW-A01 | eBay

This is important because it will determine my warranty eligibility.

Thanks!
