We traded in a 2013 Insight for our Clarity in October. I have an 80-90 mile round trip (depending on the day) that starts and ends in town, has about 25 miles of freeway at 65 and many hills. If I don't charge at work then I use about 1 gallon of gas per day in my round trip between driving carefully and using HV for the freeway portion each way. When the chargers at work are open and if I don't use the heater I have 10-15 miles of range left when I get to work and another 10-15 miles left when I get home.
Sport mode is your friend. I was scared of it for a while but the increased regeneration really helps stretch a trip, especially at onramps and offramps. The pedal is more sensitive but overall I get much better EV range driving with Sport mode than with Econ.
Be sure to test drive it, though, and make sure the dealer charges the battery so you can get the full experience. I have found that the Clarity is the perfect car for my commute; I love only getting gas on road trips, and I love having a gasoline backup in case I can't charge while at work. I have coworkers with older EVs who are up a creek if they can't charge before their commute home. Of course, your mileage may vary.
