How to get fast charging

Hi All,
First time poster....

I've 2020 Clarity and now I want to get fast charging. Here is what I'm planning to do and have some questions ...
1) Get 220v outlet installed in garage
2) Buy some kind of adapter to use with charging cable that came with purchase of vehicle .

questions:
1) is this ok to do ? will it work ?
2) Electrician said he was going to install new 50amp, 220 v outlet. is 50 amp too high ?
3) can I use the original cable OR do I've to purchase new cable that works with 220v ? If yes, can someone pl provide some link for the cable

Yes, it will work to use your EVSE on 240v. Your charging time will be cut in half approximately. A 15 amp circuit will be sufficient because the EVSE advertises a maximum of 12 amps. However, if you think you might upgrade to a heavier duty EVSE in the future a 50-amp circuit would be good.

Your OEM Honda charge cable was designed for 120V only.

If you want 240V, you will have to upgrade to either a mobile dual voltage adapter you found or use an EVSE (mounted on wall).

When I first got the Clarity, I got a mobile / travel charger (DuoSida) dual voltage charger and ran a 240V 30A circuit which charged in under 3 hours.

Now my wife's Clarity shares a 48A L2 240V charger with my Lightning and hers is done in less than 2 hours.

If you run a 50A circuit, the max pull is 40A and there are many to choose from (Juicebox, Lectron, Phillips, Siemens, etc).

Here's my 48A 240V (on a 60A circuit) EVSE that charges 2 EVs:

Actually the EVSE that comes with the Clarity is designed for 120v or 240v. It’s just that there’s no official indication or support for it. If you use an adapter you can safely plug the EVSE into 240v. This will allow you to charge the Clarity in about half the time. There is no need to “match” the ampacity of a circuit to something which is plugged into it. Since the Clarity EVSE advertises a 12 amp current draw then the only requirement is that your circuit be at least 15 amps.

Yes, with the proper adapter you can still use the original EVSE that came with the car. If you decide to have a 50 amp circuit installed then you will have the option of using an EVSE that is designed to carry higher current.
A 40 amp 240v circuit along with a 32 amp 240v EVSE will max out the Clarity PHEV's charging speed. It will also provide more than sufficient home charging rates for all but the biggest power hogs such as the Hummer EV.

Correct.

My Clarity pulls consistently about 7kW peak charge (30A) from my L2 charger.

Under 2 hours of charge is all that is needed so it's programmed to start charging at midnight.

I've been using the OEM "120V" EVSE at 240V for the year since I got it. I did change out the plug on the end to an L6-20P. All of my adapters and extension cords go from-to an L6-20. This practically insures that no one will attempt to plug a 120V device into 240V at the end of the extension cords.

The receptacles in my garage are both 14-50R, on separate 50A circuits. One, mid-garage, is on the side wall, and the other is near the large roll-up door. The Clarity lives in the driveway, and uses the driveway-serving 14-50R with an adapter to the OEM EVSE. (There's also a Siemens Versicharge mounted there, but I tend to use the OEM unit.) My wife's Bolt lives in the garage, and uses the other 14-50R for a mounted Siemens Versicharge.

Having a circuit be capable of more than an EVSE is capable of passing through, is not a problem. I can use EVSEs capable of up to 40A, but am only pulling 30A (Siemens) or 12A (Honda OEM) because that's the maximum they advertise.

BTW, Level 2 isn't considered "fast charging" in the EV community. That term is typically used for DCFC CCS Combo, CHAdeMO , and Tesla Superchargers. They typically charge at high-voltage DC (>480V) and over 100A. Newer ones can charge at up to 1000V and 500A. If you do the math, that's 500kW!

The Clarity EV was capable of DCFC, using its CCS Combo inlet. It was the only model of the Clarity family capable of DCFC, and it was at a paltry (by today's standards) ~40kW rate.

I been using a 16 amp charger (about 3 hours+ from almost zero to full charge) but recently I bought a 32 amp and I'm so happy with it. 1 hour and 40 minutes to full charge from almost empty!, not bad! I got it directly from manufacturer on special U$ 165 including shipping. Plus they will give you 20 dollars money back just for sharing a honest review. So for U$ 145 or so, you will get a good charger. Good quality too. I got this one because I can bring it with me anywhere but I did a home installation with a 8/3 + ground wire. Nema 14-50 outlet BUT the breaker is a 40 amps. Since it is a 32 amp charger, it should be fine. I know people installed Nema 14-50 with a 50 breaker but usually they got a 40 amp chargers (most for use with bigger battery packs like Teslas, etc.) For the Clarity, I'm so happy with the 32 Amp charger. Also you can get different adapters to connect to 110v outlets or 220v outlets like Dryers ones, etc. Easily you can find adapters in Amazon, Ebay, etc. I can send you links if you need it. Good luck and good decision getting a faster charger!

From what I can tell, this is by far the best deal for a current-adaptable EVSE out there. UL, to boot.

Keep and eye with them. Sometimes they got big savings. Also they got a Amazon store but on their website is where you can get the best discounts.
