How long should gasoline mode go unused?

How often should the gasoline mode be used for a 2019 Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid that is used in the Econ mode? I suspect that the gasoline mode should not go unused for months/years. American Honda replied, "There is no specific time frame for it to be on or off."

The Clarity will trigger an Engine Maintenance Mode cycle every four to eight weeks. The real issue is how long should you leave that gas in the tank without using it. The Clarity doesn't trigger a Fuel Maintenance Mode ever, so after a year or so go ahead and drive in hybrid mode until the low fuel light comes on. Then refill three gallons (half the tank).

Thanks for the reply Obermd. When did you graduate from med school? BTW, a neighbor set his garage on fire by pumping "bad" gas from a jet ski. I plan to remove the gas by driving.

Sincerely,
Tom

Name is Michael D. Ober so my userid is my last name with first and middle initials. I'm an MIT graduate with a SB in Computer Science and Engineering.

Unfortunately, Honda gives owners zero information about engine and fuel maintenance and if you ask your local Honda dealership, even the one you bought your Clarity at (assuming it was purchased new) they'll give you a song and dance about how the car always burns gas, which as Clarity owners know, if incorrect. The terms Engine Maintenance Mode (EMM) and Fuel Maintenance Mode (FMM) come from the Chevy Volt where EMM occurs every six weeks if you don't use the gas engine and FMM occurs when the average age of the gas in the tank reaches about a year old. The Clarity does EMM but as far as I can tell it doesn't perform FMM. I had to burn the gas out of my wife's 2018 Clarity after it had sat with a nearly full tank for over 13 months.

And just out of curiosity, how did it run after having gas sit in the tank for 13 months?
Dear Obermd,

Thanks for the follow-up reply. When I was a research chemist at the USEPA in Research Triangle Park in NC, our addresses include MD with a number, which stood for Mail Drop, and confused people that we were all medical doctors & the number was our graduation year. I got my 2019 Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid on 25 August 2022 from a non-affiliated dealer (Pacific Auto Center) in Costa Mesa, CA after a 280-mile drive from the Las Vegas, NV area (Henderson) because it purportedly had only about 9600 mileage. The mileage was 9799 at purchase. When I got the Certificate of Title from the CA DMV, it showed the vehicle first sold in 2020, & probably got little use during the Covid shutdown. I was leery of dealing with Carvana after finding nightmare legal reports of failing to provide the registration & title for vehicles, but my son (in GA) dealt with a dealership in OR without a problem & his wife & mother-in-law flew to OR.

Best Wishes!
Tom

It ran fine. I'm still going to go with the 12 month cycle. Face it, 7 gallons of gas a year isn't worth pushing gas age over. The real issue, which I don't think the Clarity has is moisture getting into the fuel system. Denver's a dry climate. If I were in Florida I'd be more concerned about moisture getting in.

Yeah, my last fill up was in April and I still have 4-5 gallons in there. It will likely be next spring before I put more gas in.
