Hi Everyone, I purchased my Clarity PHEV about a month ago and am loving it and the fact that I haven't had to visit a gas station in that month!

In the last week, I've noticed that my car will switch out of EV mode to using the gas engine. At first, I thought I noticed a correlation between accelerating rapidly and the car automatically switching to gas mode, but it also happened once when I was at a stop sign. My EV charge was not close to depletion in any of these instances. I'd rather stay in EV as long as possible.

Does anyone know why this is happening? And how do I return the car back to EV mode?

Thanks!

as i understand it there is no way to fully control when the EV mode is enabled. If you put it in econ mode then it will try and maximize the amount of time in EV mode but there is no guarantee.

I mean for my daily commute I am almost always in EV mode, even when it gets down pretty low on battery.

The Clarity is programmed to run the engine (ICE) at various times. It will come on for maybe 5 minutes or less then the Clarity will go back to EV mode.

The assumption is the on board computer will run the ICE for maintenance (ie) to ensure the engine runs for lubrication etc. There doesn't seem to be any regular schedule to the maintenance run or no one is real sure what the algorithm is using to determine when it runs.

Bottom line is...it is perfectly normal for the ICE to cycle on while in normal mode (no buttons pushed...just start it and drive) once in awhile.

Hope this helps.

Good luck!
Welcome.
