Hi Friends,

I am a new owner of a Honda Clarity 2019 Base model. I have 3500 miles on the car. I like the car very much and am enjoying the ride.

I have a question though - When I fill the gas tank (7 Gal), the miles the car shows me is 192. this number is just for the gas and not electric battery. When i charge the Battery fully, it adds 46 miles more.

But, my cousin has a clarity and when she fills gas, her full tank shows her 295 miles gas efficiency.

I just wanted to know if there is something wrong with my car.

Any help would be really appreciated.

A full tank of fuel should get you close to 300 miles range.
Mine gets 325 miles per tank.

You should take your '19 Clarity to a dealer to have the fuel gauge calibrated or software patch applied.

When I have a full tank of fuel plus a full charge, I get close to 400 miles total range.

What you are referring to is the range estimate, not the fuel gauge. The fuel gauge is the bars on the right side of the display and corresponds to actual fuel in the tank. The range estimate on the other hand is based on recent driving and is not always an accurate prediction. There was a software problem on earlier models that caused the range estimate to be way too high, like 900 miles, that was fixed in a software patch. I am not aware of the problem causing the estimated range to appear too low.

The most important thing is how many miles of HV driving do you actually get out of a tank. Unfortunately the car does not display HV miles anywhere so you have to track it yourself somehow, maybe keep a notepad handy and jot down the starting and ending mileage each time you use HV. Or use one of the trip odometers, reset it to 0 when you start driving HV, then note the number of trip miles when you switch back to EV. You just need to do this for one or two tankfuls to give you an idea what your actual HV range is, and also dividing HV miles by the number of gallons you filled with give you a fairly accurate mpg value, probably more accurate than the mpg numbers that appear in the display.

Thank you very much for the reply. the explanation you provided makes sense. I was referring to the estimated miles. The Gauge shows full bars whenever i fill gas. I will try monitoring my trip today and will keep you posted. I booked an appointment with the service team of my dealership for next week. So, am going to get these tests done by then.

If you will be taking your car in to be checked out, while there you might also have them do a battery capacity test, even though that is unrelated to the fuel estimate. Make sure you tell them you want the hybrid battery tested not the 12V battery. Hybrid battery capacity is a nice piece of information to have when your car is new so that you have something to compare with in later years to know if the battery has degraded. And it also tells you what condition your battery is currently in. Most people get a result of about 55 Ah. Batteries are not eligible for warranty replacement unless they fall below 36.6 Ah. The dealer might try and charge for the test, but the test is supposed to have been done at PDI inspection but it usually isn't, so people find that if they tell the dealer that the capacity test was not done during PDI they usually will do it for free.

Actually even though everyone calls it battery capacity test that's really a misnomer because the battery capacity is a value stored in the car's system, and to get the number they hook up their computer and get the reading from it, it's not like the mechanic actually tests the battery capacity.

So, if you can see the pics i have attached, the Empty tank picture shows that i drove 257 miles with 25 miles left. After this i had to fill 6.12 gal of Gas. So, doing the math (6.12x42 = 257.04 miles) which is perfect. and when i did a complete charge and full tank, the full tank picture shows you the readings. So, i would like to know if thats all good.

Well at least your fuel estimate is getting closer to reality, since it now shows 221 estimated HV miles instead of 192 like before. Your actual HV range seems to be about 294 (42mpg x 7 gallon). Although as the weather gets colder both gas and EV range will decrease somewhat.

Range estimates in all car are just that - estimates. And they are estimates based on your previous so many miles. I wouldn't worry about it. For some reason the range estimate for EV miles is much more accurate that the HV estimate.
