I have a Level 2 charger at 40 Amps. The car will only take 32 amps. My full charge takes 2 hours, 6 minutes.

16A @ 240V = 3.84 kW
14.5 kWh / 3.84 kW =3.77 hrs

I love calculations, but as anyone can see by comparing both quotes, the "Real World" math above is somehow off.

Meaning: The calculation at ~16 amps shows a ~3:46 minute charge time, BUT when you double the charge rate to ~32 amps you don't cut the 3:46 minutes in half, it is at 2:06 minutes.

So I still need to hear from someone that actually uses a 16 Amp level 2 charger on a regular basis.

The actual charge time will vary based on many factors, including battery and ambient temps.

But the math above does work. While the specs say 32 A, the car actually pulls 7.2 kW which would put a full charge at 2.01 hours -pretty darn close to the 2 hours 6 minutes as posted above.

The charge rate does taper as the battery nears full, and will add a few minutes to the charge time. The taper will happen sooner with a 32 A EVSE and add more time than with a 16A.

Not sure the scenario where a few minutes difference matters so much, but if you use a 4 hour charge time for a 16 A EVSE, that will pretty close. Unless the temperature is above or below 70 degrees. Or you don't start with a completely "empty" battery. Or the actual line voltage is 235 and not 240. Or you just finished driving hard and the battery is hot. Or the car has been sitting overnight and the battery is cold. Or ...

^ While I'd still like to hear from someone that charges at Level 2 / 16 amps, that was a good explanation.

Thank you.

Hi everone, new Clarity owner here. I am just using my Siemens Versicharge 30A. Got it for my Bolt and liking it so far. Using the same thing for the Clarity. Seems to work good so far. Charged from almost zero in about 2.25 hours or so.

At 16 A 240 Volts it will be almost exactly twice as long as 32 A 240 Volts. The PHEV Clarity is rated to charge from empty to full in 2.5 hours at 32A so expect 5 hours at half the Amps. Real world most people are seeing somewhat better times. If a few minutes one way or the other is a concern there are also 24 A EVSEs or go all in and get 32 A one.

Many 240v 16 amp EVSE owners report charging times down to 4 hours.

There's a big difference between your guesstimate of "so expect 5 hours" & multiple reports of 4 hour charging, like a 25% difference; that's not a few minutes.

Not sure. I would guess 3 hours. Sorry. I think it varies as well.
