Time of Day Charging

Can the 2018 Clarity PHEV be programmed to skip high load hours as defined by my electric coop? Basically, I'd like the car to stop charging at 4 PM and then resume at 8 PM if it is in a charging cycle.

I started looking into this but ultimately came across my 1980s vintage 120V timer for my Christmas lights (with the red and green plastic pegs in the grooves of the wheel) and decided to use that to coordinate with my TOU plan. I'll be interested in a more modern solution.

You could set a timer schedule from 8 pm to 4 pm, since the schedule repeats every day the Clarity would start charging every night at 8 pm and stop charging at 4 pm if it hadn't already hit 100% by then. And then it will resume charging at 8 pm. However this only works if the car is plugged in at 8 pm so that the charge session can begin on time. If you get home at say 8:15 pm and plug in nothing will happen since you missed the appointed start time. But in those cases you could use the fob to start charging, but it will then be on a charge to full session which might go past 4 pm if using level 1. But if using level 2 that shouldn't be a problem.

Also if you unplug and go for a drive anytime between 8 pm and 4 pm it will stop that charge session, and it won't resume again until the next scheduled session at 8 pm. Which may not be a problem, let's say charging starts at 8 pm Monday night, you unplug Tuesday morning at 10 am, by then the car was fully charged so you start out with a full battery. You get home at 2 pm, and based on your expected driving for the remainder of the day (if any) and your remaining EV range, you decide that you have enough range remaining for today, so you just plug in and at 8 pm the next scheduled charge session begins.

However let's say when you arrive home at 2 pm you are low on charge, and you expect to head out again at 6 pm and need some more juice before then. Well you could start charging with the key fob, and then set your kitchen timer to remind you to stop charging at 4 pm. Or .... when you get home at 2 pm and need to charge, you can modify the charge schedule start time to 2:05 pm (but leave the end time as 4 pm). Then wait a couple of minutes for the 2:05 pm charge session to begin, once it starts charging you can then use the app to change the start time back to 8 pm, meanwhile the current 2:05 pm to 4:00 pm session that just started will continue running and will shut off at 4 pm. Then at 8:00 pm the next session will begin and it will start charging again (assuming you are home by 8:00 pm, if not use the key fob.

Or .... you can plug it into a Christmas tree timer.

So Honda didn't really think through time of day based surcharges. Christmas tree timer it is...
