Exclamation 25 battery boosts in 1 year

Dear friends,

I am in deep trouble with my family for the PEV we leased - Honda Clarity - 11 months ago. Over this period of time, we have called roadside assistance to our home-based garage a couple of dozen times, including today, to get a battery boost. No one - neither dealership, nor Honda Customer Support - has been able to explain why this happens.

Here's what is going on - if I charge my car from less than 50% full then the main 17 kW battery charges to 100% but the 12 V battery fully drains. As this always happens overnight, I dread waking up and checking if my car is dead, like what happened today. I charge from a 240 V JuiceNet charger, which works quite reliably and logs its charging behavior. Usually, this happens on the weekend, which means Honda Customer Support is not available and I am always struggling with my weekend plans.

This happened last night. Sigh. Right now I am waiting for Honda Clarity roadside assistance to be boosted. I know a couple of things - there is no parasitic draw, the battery is healthy, and my EV JuiceNet never had a problem with my previous EV (Mercedes B-Series). The usual experts can't seem to find any help for me and that brought me here. Is there a problem during the charging process that drains the battery, something like a computer that is monitoring the charging? Sometimes the car will beep three times when I lock it as it starts to charge and I can't see any problems in the car, like light left on, car not turned off, etc. That is the sound I dread because I know that the next morning I will wake up waiting for roadside assistance but I don't know what to do.

Sorrowfully yours,
Mehta

Defective Lease

Sorry but I specifically don't know the reason for your discharging 12 volt battery problem; however, I certainly wouldn't have put up with 25 battery recharging incidents. Your Clarity lease car is defective, and I would demand another from the dealer...simple as that.

PEV 12v issues

Wow, you're the 1st post with an electric only I've seen so far. That said, I have a thought that may or may not be relevant. On our PHEV models, the 12v batterie is charged by the gas engine when in HV mode. That's why it will occasionally run even when the traction batteries are fully charged. But if yours is 'TOTAL' electric then I guess the 12v has to be charged either by driving or plugging it in, hence mystery.

That said and not knocking your choice, I'm wondering why Honda even offered a PEV which only marginally increases the battery range the PHEV model gives but has a gas engine to keep going. My guess is they will either increase the range to be more like the Tesla or just drop that model. Maybe you could talk them into exchanging yours for a PHEV (you'll like it much more) given the problems you've had.

I know that for the PHEV version, if you drive electric only for a while and don't use gas, fully charging the battery willl get the car to charge the 12-volt battery from mains current. I think it should be the other way around, charge the 12-volt then the drive battery, or both simultaneously.
What happens when you fully charge?

Since you've already had multiple full discharges of the 12v battery, it needs to be replaced (if not already). Have they at least done that for you?
