Question 2018 Clarity Owner 1.5 years

We bought our Clarity in March 2018. We really love the car and get a lot of admirers almost each day. South Carolina has very few of them on the road. Our full charge ranges were 48 - 52 each morning until recently. 33 - 42 seems to be the new norm. Dealership did an update, but nothing improved. This is very disappointing and saw on posts that others have had the same problem. Has anyone gotten to the root of the problem other than to blame the weather? Thanks, Beth

Hi and welcome aboard!

The estimated range miles you are experiencing is due to 3 major reason and not a cause for alarm.
1. The batteries do not hold a full charge in colder temperatures (battery chemistry and common for all EV cars).
2. Use of cabin heating seriously depletes battery charge (heating uses resistive heating that draws direct power from the battery).
3. The way you drive also affects the range (heavy foot, jack rabbit starts, terrain, etc).

The guess-o-meter that estimates the range can be altered during the drive by:
Turning off the cabin heating (climate control), drive economically in ECO mode, and storing the car overnight in a heated or warmer area.

I am in Southern California where we experience warm weather in the winter and do not see the drops that the rest of the country experiences.
So my range never drops below 47 miles and often time in the summer, I get 60-70 miles per charge.

You maintained 48-52 all last winter?

I bought my 2018 in August of 2019 - four months and twelve days ago - and the most I've ever seen on the GOM was 45 miles of range. With our recent spate of days in the 30s and low 40s with nights in the 20s that dropped to 39. It's been a bit warmer for the past three days and I'm seeing 42.

I'm not taking it seriously: When I'm driving on the interstate in HV mode and the range meter shows 10 mile of EV remaining, I'll switch to EV when I'm 10 miles from home - and nearly always arrive with 2 to 5 miles of range remaining!
